Laundry Lint Artist to Visit Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Williamsburg to Explain Her Unique Art Medium
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (March 28, 2011) – Everyday laundry lint, straight out of a clothes dryer, is the art medium of choice for Heidi Hooper of Stroudsburg, Pa., who uses the various hues of lint to create colorful artwork.
Heidi Hooper will visit Odditorium on April 7 to demonstrate this strange but totally beautiful art form!
The award-winning artist, who has 10 pieces of her lint art in Ripley Odditoriums worldwide, will be in Williamsburg on Thursday, April 7 at the Believe It or Not! to demonstrate her unusual technique and to showcase several pieces of her finished art. She will be at Ripley’s, located at 1735 Richmond Road, from 2 to 4 p.m.
One of the pieces she will be exhibiting is a portrait of Brandy, a dog with a 17 inch tongue who was featured in a Ripley’s Believe It or Not! TV show.
The amazing artwork of Hooper is made entirely of laundry lint. There is no color added and no paint. “That’s what makes it such an incredible art form,” said Scott Hart, general manager of Ripley’s Believe It or Not! in Williamsburg. “She must carefully sort out the lint by color and then carefully blend each into her artwork.”
Known as the “dryer lint lady,” Hooper is featured in Ripley’s “Believe It or Not” book, “Enter If You Dare,” for her unusual creations, which she crafts using only one arm. In 1999, it was discovered that she had a cancerous desmoid tumor in her upper right arm which had to be surgically removed through a series of hospital stays, radiation treatments, and operations. This necessitated the removal of her upper arm muscle, limiting the use of that arm. As an artist in metalworking prior to her cancer, Hooper continued on, determined to make the best art she could with her limitations.
She began working in polymer and other materials, and has recently found that dryer lint can make a very interesting medium as well! Her work has won her awards, and her work has been featured in magazines and elsewhere.
