Man Swallows Sword Underwater: Becomes First in America to do so – and Survive!

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (May 18, 2007) – Shortly after 9 a.m. this morning, world renown sword swallower Dan Meyer became the first person in North America to swallow a sword under water!  Taking it to the hilt,  he swallowed a 24 inch long, solid steel blade while submerged 15 feet below the surface of a tank filled with live sharks and stingrays at Ripley’s Aquarium in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

 The Incredible Act took place at Ripley’s Aquarium in Myrtle Beach, 15 Feet Under Water in a Tank filled with Sharks and Stingrays!

With his successful swallow, Meyer made entertainment history and is slated to be featured in a future Believe It or Not! publication and will be highlighted in the popular and long-running Ripley’s Believe It or Not! cartoon, still read daily in 200 newspapers in 42 countries!

Meyer swallowed the 24 inches of solid steel while surrounded by more than 80 sharks and stingrays in 85,000 gallons of salt water.

“I had to totally focus and stay calm. When I leaned back my head and opened my mouth, the air rushed upward out of my lungs,” Meyer noted, adding that was only one of the challenges he faced, in addition to the inherent dangers of sword swallowing – cuts, punctures and perforations. “I also had to contend with the sharks and stingrays while hoping they didn’t bump into the sword.”

 The historic feat took place at Ripley’s Aquarium at 1110 Celebrity Circle in Myrtle Beach, inside the Ray Bay habitat, populated with sharks and sting rays.  Peter MacIntyre, General Manager of Ripley’s Aquarium had EMTs and an ambulance on hand, just in case, but none were needed.  The crowd of 100-plus included local and national media, as well as some lucky students who were at the aquarium on a field trip.
