Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Pulls off the Ultimate Vehicle Trade–in at London Museum

ORLANDO, Fla. (Feb. 4, 2012) – Ripley’s Believe It or Not! today pulled off perhaps the most amazing vehicle trade-in ever. The company used a massive crane to swap two of the most unusual car creations in the world through the roof of Ripley’s Believe It or Not! London Odditorium, right in the heart of Piccadilly Circus.

Crystal-covered Mini Cooper swapped for a Ferrari made of yarn; all through the roof of Ripley’s five-story London Odditiorium!!!

Going out was a one-of-a-kind 2004 Mini Cooper covered in more than one million Swarovski crystals, used to create some of America’s most iconic emblems, including the White House, the American flag, Mount Rushmore, the Hollywood sign and the Statue of Liberty. The car may be the most valuable Mini Cooper in the world.

Coming in was bright red Ferrari made entirely of yarn. The life-size car was made by British artist Lauren Porter, who hand-knitted it from 12 miles of yarn stretched over a steel frame!

The Westminster City Council gave special permission for the streets of the bustling district to be closed in the early hours Saturday morning so the giant crane could be put in place for the intricate lift. Inside, there were only inches to spare on either side of the narrow gap used to get the cars in and out.

“The crystal Mini Cooper is one of Ripley’s most prized possessions, so the pressure was really on to get it out without a scratch,” said Tim O’Brien, VP of Communications for Ripley Entertainment Inc.

Next up for the Mini Cooper is a boat trip across the Atlantic, bound for a new Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Odditorium planned for Baltimore, Maryland.
