“Bug” Dad This Father’s Day Weekend At Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Times Square

New York, NY (June 6, 2012) – This Father’s Day weekend, Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Times Square encourages kids to do what they do best – “bug” Dad. On Saturday, June 16 and Sunday, June 17, 2012, kids who bring their fathers to Ripley’s Times Square can challenge Dad to a variety of bizarre bug-eating dares for a chance to redeem free admission.  David George Gordon, “The Bug Chef” and author of the Eat-a-Bug Cookbook will be cooking up samples of his favorite insect recipes from Scorpion Scaloppine to Crickets and Orzo at the one-of-a-kind attraction.

“The Bug Chef” Cooks Up Insect Eating Challenges for Fathers to Earn Complimentary Admission

“The Bug Chef” will host live cooking demonstrations from noon  to 4 p.m. using grasshoppers, jumbo mealworms and giant-sized leafcutter ants, among others, offering onlookers a chance to taste-test some of his bug-inspired culinary masterpieces.

As a gift to Dad, every father entering the Odditorium is invited to take one spin on the “Wacky Wheel of Dad Dares” for a chance to earn complimentary admission.  Filled with outrageous entomophagy (bug-eating) challenges, Ripley’s “Wacky Wheel” features “Bug-Off”- a competition of father vs. child to see who can eat three cockroaches the fastest, “Mystery Meat” – Dad guesses the insect after he eats it, “Kid’s Choice” – where son or daughter dares Dad to eat the bug of their choice, and much more. Dads who successfully complete the insect-eating task in which their spin lands (or at least makes a valiant effort trying), will receive free admission to the Odditorium on June 16 and 17, 2012. Any fathers too “chicken” to take on the challenge will receive half price admission when accompanied by a paid full-price child admission.

“Grilling up scorpions and tarantulas…it’s a typical Father’s Day barbeque but with Ripley’s twist,” says Michael Hirsch, President/General Manager of Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Times Square. “Kids are going to love watching Dad squirm uncomfortably as he tastes one of David George Gordon’s creepy culinary creations. And who knows, maybe some Dads will leave with an expanded palate.”

David George Gordon is “The Bug Chef” and author of the Eat-a-Bug Cookbook: 33 Ways to Cook Grasshoppers, Ants, Water Bugs, Spiders, Centipedes, and Their Kin. Gordon has been featured on Late Night with Conan O’Brien, Live with Regis and Kathie Lee, ABC’s Nightline and Barbara Walters’ The View.

To date, Gordon has showcased his bug-cooking prowess in 30 states and four foreign countries and has appeared at the Smithsonian Institution, American Museum of Natural History, Yale University and Singapore’s Food Festival 2003. David lives in Seattle, Washington, with his wife and their pet tarantula, Wes.

In order to redeem free admission, all fathers must be accompanied by at least one paid full-price child admission. Insect cuisine samples available while supplies last.
